This weekend is Memorial Day, the unofficial start to the summer. That means weekend sales, backyard barbecues, and blockbuster movies. While all those things are fun, many of us lose sight of the original intent of the day, honoring servicemen and women both past and present. Philadelphia has a strong connection to Memorial Day. Our Laurel Hill Cemetery held one of the first Memorial Day observances in the U.S in 1868. Neighboring Doylestown claims to have the longest running Memorial Day parade in the country. And we have Independence Mall, home of the Liberty Bell. I’ll probably do a mix of the fun stuff with some more somber, private reflection to appropriately honor and thank those who serve our country.
