LED-Light-Emitting Diodes were first discovered at the turn of the twentieth century but did not begin to have a practical application until the 1960s. Today LEDs are commonplace in lighting and displays. Because of their low power consumption, high light output, and small environmental impact, some predict that LED lighting will eventually become the lighting of choice for consumers.

According to recent data from the National Center for Health Statistics, the average American will live to be 78 years of age. Not only are people living longer, life stages are shifting. As gerontologist Sandra Timmerman noted in USA Today (June 12, 2007), people no longer follow a linear path from school to work to retirement. "They go to school. They work. They go back to school, retire and decide to go back to school and go back into the workforce again."

Despite possible healthcare and retirement costs, increasing longevity and shifting retirement patterns may yield a bonanza for employers. Mature, experienced workers, trained in a variety of workplace settings can add to a company's competitiveness. On the other hand, older workers will certainly come with their own unique set of baggage. It will be up to Consumer Reporting Agencies to help businesses identify the best workers.
