I recently sent out an email to all the people I know requesting updated contact information. I had not communicated with many of the people on the list for ages. Responses poured in and I was amazed and impressed by the effectiveness of the simple gesture of reconnecting. There was one little problem, though; I did not adequately proofread my note. Some people responded by gently and humorously pointing out my errors. I was suitably mortified. The majority of the responses were of another kind. I was overwhelmed with greetings and glad tidings from people throughout our industry who, not having been in touch in a while, wrote to send warmest wishes. I am truly and deeply touched.

I look forward to reconnecting with you all at NAPBS in New Orleans.

Tech Tip
Easter egg-"Easter eggs" are hidden messages or hidden features in software, movies, books, CDs, or DVDs. The name derives from the tradition of the Easter egg hunt. Many governments and corporations forbid the use of computer programs containing Easter eggs due to  concerns that they might be vehicles for malicious software.

Sitting in the Mississippi Delta, 105 miles up river from the Gulf of Mexico, New Orleans was founded in 1718 by the French. It was ceded to Spain in 1763 and returned briefly to French control in 1801. In 1803 New Orleans was sold to the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase. Known as the Big Easy and the "most unique City in America," New Orleans is home to a rich cultural mix.

See you at NAPBS!

Generation to Generation
Jay Eidelman

Generational differences in the workplace can lead to conflict if employers are not savvy to the generational variations. Workplace observers point to four generations in the workplace and each has a very different work ethic and attitude. Each group is also motivated differently. Which generation are you?

The "Silent Generation" or "Matures" (born 1927-1945): used to hierarchical work structure, loyal, crave respect, good consensus builders, and excellent mentors.

Boomers (born 1946-1964): competitive, hard working to the point of being workaholics, concerned with ethics and fairness, motivated by personal achievement, good team builders.

"Generation X" (born 1965-1981): independent, informal, and crave balance between career and personal life

"Generation Y," "Nexters," or "Millennials" (born 1982-2000): open and team oriented, yet assertive when it comes to their needs.

So, how does one contend with these conflicting work styles? The authors of Generations at Work, Ron Zemke, Claire Raines, and Bob Filipczak, offer this advice, which they call the "Acorn imperatives":

Accommodate employee differences.

Create workplace choices.

Operate from a sophisticated management style.

Use a situational leadership style to accommodate many workplace situations and issues.

Respect competence and initiative.

Nourish retention.
